Zvezda LaGG-3 1/48 inbox review (srb/eng)

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. New from Zvezda in 1/48 scale – Lavochkin-Gorbunov-Gudkov LaGG-3 Lavochkin LaGG-3 from the 66th production series was the last airplane with liquid-cooling engine which was designed by Lavochkin Construction Bureau. After implementing design changes, the top speed of this new modification was 591 km/h, which is 25 km/h more than previous production series. This fighter plane was equipped with one 20 mm cannon and one 12,7 mm machine gun. This version, the most advanced out of all LaGG-3, was produced in GAZ-31 factory in Tbilisi from May 1943 until June 1944, when the production of LaGG-3 was definitely canceled. Aforementioned airplane, the topic of this review is the latest Zvezda 1/48 scale LaGG-3 from the 66th production series (box number 4833). New model of the airplane does not require additional description, since it was introduced in multiple editions by different model producers in 1/48 scale, all of which have its advantages, as well as disadvantages. Zvezda’s new LaGG-3 raises hope that the modelers’ wishes about this model are finally fulfilled, therefore providing detailed and accurate model, thanks to new technologies of tool production and plastic injection. All parts are packed in one plastic bag and there is 163 of them, which, when assembled, give a model of 185 mm in length and 205 mm of wingspan. The largest sprue contains parts for wing assembly, which do not have a lot of surface detail, due to the fact that original wings were covered in plywood, with accurate filling and lacquer cover. Flaps are an integral part of the wings of the model, while ailerons can be separately positioned in a desired position. Both fuselage halves come on the second sprue. They were casted together with the vertical stabilizer, while the directional rudder is separate part. On the same sprue there are some parts of the landing gear. Together with the nicely detailed cockpit comes a pilot figure, which is a nice addition for a vignette or diorama. Special detail is the engine Klimov M-105 type VK-105 PF, which comes on a separate sprue and is a familiar piece from earlier Zvezda models of PE-2, YAK-3, YAK-9. Of course, it is possible to display the engine either with open or closed cowling. One additional sprue contains remaining parts of the landing gear, with tail wheel casted with landing gear leg, propeller and cockpit parts. Nicely casted transparent parts are packed in a separate bag and can be fitted in either open or closed position. Decals provide a choice of five colorful and attractive planes from VVS SSSR between 1942 and 1944. The decal sheet contains a decal for the instrument panel, which eases the detailing of the cockpit. Decals are printed nicely and precisely on the thin glossy film. Instructions are detailed, painting and marking instructions are in full color, with paints marked in Zvezda and Tamiya codes. Special addition is a stand, which along with the pilot figure, allows building a model with landing gear retracted, the so-called in-flight model. In the end, a conclusion is that Zvezda offered one very interesting model to the world model market, and that this model is going to be a nice addition to any WWII fighter plane collection.
