By Milovan Bajagić photo: Predrag Stamenković Posle izdatog T-70B (Zvezda 3631), Zvezda je izdala još jednu ineresantnu maketu u razmeri 1/35 – SU -76M. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… After issuing T-70B (Zvezda 3631), Zvezda released another interesting model in 1/35th scale – SU-76M. It is a must-have for fans of Soviet WWII armor. Historical info: Su –76 was the most produced Soviet armored vehicle after T-34 tank during WWII (according to some sources, as much as 14 292 were built). It was constructed on the elongated T-70 chassis, and was very reliable and cheap to produce. The vehicle’s main gun was phenomenal Soviet gun ZIS-3 with 76,2 mm caliber. The gun was battle tested and proven as a reliable, precise and resilient weapon. It was constructed by S.A. Ginzburg in 1942, based on the crew requests and combat experience. The extended T-70 chassis was selected with mounted Zis-3 gun with added armor in order to protect the crew. First versions had an armor plate on top and back, which were removed during modifications in order to gain speed, as well as, crew comfort and reduce weight. Crew had 4 members – commander, driver-mechanic, gunner and loader. The vehicle was produced in four factories, where the biggest production was in GAZ (Gorkovskiy Avtomobilski Zavod). Engine had 140 hp and could develop speed of up to 45 km/h, where the vehicle autonomy on full tank was 250-320 km on flat surfaces. Mobility combined with small weight made it an excellent weapon in difficult terrain, such as Pripyat swamps and urban areas. Excellent and proven 76,2 mm gun was able to destroy even Panther tanks in combat, with a shot to its side. While it was powerless against Tigers, the crew developed tactics to hit the tracks or the barrel to incapacitate them. ZIS 3 could also work as a light artillery against infantry, while the most successful crew was that of Rem Nikolaevich Ulyanov, whose gun was nicknamed Columbine. After the war, the SPG continued to be used in Korean War, as well as in Middle East wars. The gun was also used in Yugoslav Army (several vehicles were left as a Soviet military aid after the liberation of Belgrade in 1944, while the rest were bougt in 1947 – 52 vehicles in total. German nickname for this weapon was “Little bitch”. About the model: The model comes in a solid box placed into another nicely illustrated one. The model has 343 parts, and the contents of the box are: instruction sheet, paint scheme, decals, one small tree with transparent parts and 5 trees in olive green plastic. Last few years Zvezda made significant effort in production and with new molds and high-quality styrene takes the place of best price-quality model company on the market. Two trees hold parts for the drivetrain – wheels and tracks. Each track has one large part with a number of links and the rest is given as individual links. Link assembly requires a lot of patience and attention while assembling due to being narrow. Parts for the rest of the vehicle come on four trees – three large and one smaller with transparent parts. Engine of the vehicle is not given, but interior is. Shells, radio device and other interior parts, when painted look rather attractive. Assembling the ZIS 3 gun requires special attention during fixing it to the vehicle. The detailing of interior (shells, aiming device, PPŠ-41 machine gun with spare ammo, etc.) is superb, and although the model seems to be rather simple, it requires a lot of time and work. Smaller transparent tree contains viewports and lights. The paint scheme has four different variants (one winter and 3 summer ones, with one having Chinese markings). Decals are printed on a quality paper with blue background and have 4 different marking sets. The weakest side of this model is the instruction sheet. It has 30 steps, but the details are rather unclear and bunched together. Zvezda once more published an excellent model. Despite relatively small number of pieces for the 1/35 scale, the model is targeted at experienced modelers with strong nerves. For the fans of dioramas, this model will be a real treat, especially for weathering. I would recommend this model to all fans of WWII armor. We would like to thank Zvezda for the sample for this review.
