…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… Airplane model of Yakovlev YAK-40 (Яковлев Як-40) (NATO code „Codling”) in 1:144 scale from company Zvezda, box number 7030 is a novel and rather expected model, although there are two models of the same plane in same scale by AZ models and Eastern Express. Honestly Zvezda surpassed those two in every aspect, with plastic quality, detailing, production technology and precise decal sheet. Jak-40 is the first triple jet engine passenger plane in the world that is especially dedicated to the short range travels of up to 1500 km and it can use short and unprepared runways. The plane is developed in 1964, in Yakovlev Constructor Bureau. It had maiden flight on October 21st 1966, with being a part of the commercial fleet of AEROFLOT from as early as 1967. Yak-40 is the first Soviet plane that got flying certificates of Western countries. This plane was in production from 1966 until 1981 with 1011 jets being built, out of which 125 were exported to 18 countries. Yugoslavia bought six of them for the Air Force, and since 1971 these planes are part of 675th Mixed Transport Squadron, based on Batajnica airfield. Two of those were in standard passenger version with 30 seats, one was luxury saloon VIP variant, one was a used as a radio reconnaissance version, equipped with Aries-A / Smart Guard system for electronic and radio reconnaissance, and the remaining pair were equipped with systems used to calibrate airport sensors and devices. Airplane model YAK-40 – ZVEZDA 1/144 The whole model is created in 3D technology and injected in large series production molds, casted in a quality grey plastic. Boxing is typical of Zvezda with artwork boxing covering protective thick cardboard, within which are 59 parts on two trees of grey plastic and one with transparent parts for crew and passengers cabin. There is also a two-piece stand in the box. Parts quality and detailing is excellent, panels are in negative, with service openings and rivets being subtle. As a difference to AZ Models and Eastern Express versions Zvezda model uses transparent windows, although the interior is missing. There is a chance for aftermarket companies to fix this oversight. Landing gear is also highly detailed, as much as the scale permits. Color and marking On the decal sheet there are two options for marking, and the color instructions are a two-page A4 paper with Tamiya and Zvezda color codes. Markings represent an Aeroflot 1991 plane, as well as one from the VKS transport squadron based on Vnukovo in 2009. Register, density and color sharpness of the decals are excellent with a thin semi-matt finish. Conclusion Zvezda produced and released a highly detailed model of this interesting airplane. The model leaves ample of choices for assembly as well as painting and marking, especially with the LiftHere sets for the ex-YU, which will be interesting to modelers form the ex-YU.
