Soviet „Shch“ – „Shchuka“ class submarine, 1/144 Zvezda inbox rev

Maksimalna dubina zarona: 90 metara

Sve u svemu, solidna ponuda i aftermarket dodataka.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Second most numerous class of Soviet submarines in WWII (second to the „M“ class submarines). There were 88 units built in total, out of which 36 were lost (34 during the war). The numerical designation was also indicator to which fleet the sub belonged, so the vessels with numbers 1xx belonged to Pacific fleet, with 2xx belonged to the Black sea fleet, 3xx to the Baltic and 4xx to the Northern sea fleet. The surviving submarines were stricken in mid-50’s with two of them transferred to communist China on a loan. Shchuka class submarines were medium sized submarines. There were six different modifications or subtypes of these subs (series III, V, Vbis, Vbis2, X and Xbis). The model inside the box belongs to the subtype X. These series or subtypes differed in the coning tower shape and range with the vessels of the subtype III having one single 45mm gun. The submarines of this class, subtypes V and X were considered most seaworthy of the Soviet subs during WWII.
Displacement: 577 tons surfaced, 704 tons submerged
Dimensions: length 57 m, beam 6,2 m and draught
Propulsion: two-shaft diesel electric (1370 HP diesel, 800 HP electric)
Speed: 12,5 knots surfaced, 6,3 knots submerged
Range: 6000 nmi at 8 kn speed
Maximum depth: 90 meters
Complement: 38
Weaponry: 4x bow and 2x stern torpedo tubes with 10 torpedoes
Two semi-auto 45 mm single guns.

One of the Soviet submarine aces was officer in command of Schc-214, Vladimir Yakovlevich Vlasov. He sank 6 ships in total, out of which the largest ship was 3336 brt Italian tanker „Torcello“. He sank six enemy vessels with five of them being Turkish schooners. Shch-214 was sunk by MAS-571 in a collision.

About the model:

The model comes in double box, with outer one depicting the submarine in the surface sail. The signalist signals what appears to be the Soviet cruiser (probably a modernized Svetlana- class cruiser, although they had three stacks while the one on illustration has four). In the inner hard box there are parts for the model, instructions, color sheet for painting and a small bag with decals and rope. The rope is too big for this scale, so should be replaced. The scale of the model is 1/144 and when assembled it is almost 40 cm long (39,6 cm to be exact). There are 117 parts distributed over three trees. On the first tree there are two hull halves, the second contains deck and coning tower halves; while the third contains all the fiddly bits and pieces. The model has a lot of nice detailing, as can be seen on the photos. The hull and tower are rivetted with a lot of surface detail. There is almost no flash whatsoever, ejector pins are placed so that they can not be seen from the outside. The instructions are easy to follow and come on four pages. Color sheet contains schemes for two subs in before and during the war scheme. It is however too bad that one of the schemes is not that of the Vlasov ship. The subs given are „ShCh-402“ and „ShCh-209“. Paints are given in Tamiya and Zvezda codes. Even before the sub entered market there were aftermarket parts available from PE parts, metal parts to the resin parts and crew (Microdesign, Eskadra, Profi Metal). With all this taken into account I would like to conclude that this is a nice model within a somewhat underrepresented group of models (Soviet WWII navy). Considering all this there shouldn’t be any problem during the construction process. More on that later.
I would like to recommend this model to every modeler.
